Ambassadors

A global network on the ground

Student ambassadors carry the Challenge into their campuses and regions. They connect students to teams and mentors, and make sure access reaches everyone.

When I think about what will connect disparate communities over this next century, the clear answer is sustainability. Sustainability touches every discipline and sector of society, willing us to rise to the challenge. Whether through policy, technology, or finance, I believe that our passions in our respective disciplines can each contribute towards a long-term vision of a world worth living in.

I care about sustaintability because it is the center and foundation of social and economical development that are aligned with the environment. We can’t think about a future (or a present) without protecting natural resources and people’s well-being.

I grew up in Lijiang, where the mountains are clear after rain, the old town glows under warm evening lights, and narrow stone streets carry the sounds of footsteps, ancient Naxi music, and running water. To many visitors, Lijiang is a beautiful destination. To me, it is home. When I was younger, I mostly saw the beauty. I saw tourists taking pictures beside old wooden buildings, small shops opening along the streets, and local families earning a living from visitors who came from far away. Tourism brought energy and opportunity to my hometown. But slowly, I also began to notice another side: careless waste, overused spaces, and a kind of hurry that did not always respect the place itself. The same scenery that attracted people could also be damaged by them. That was when sustainability became personal to me. I realized it is not only about protecting forests, rivers, or mountains in a general way. It is about protecting the relationship between a place and the people who subsist on it. In Lijiang, development and environmental protection are not two separate topics. They meet every day in the lives of local communities. My experience as a GSC 2025 Zhejiang University campus volunteer helped me understand how concern can become action. I helped connect the school with participating teams, reminded students of deadlines and material requirements, collected submissions, and supported on-site coordination. These tasks were practical, yet they showed me that sustainability work needs more than passion. It needs communication, organization, and people who can help others participate. I care about sustainability because I have seen how easily a place can be loved and harmed at the same time. Lijiang taught me why sustainability matters; GSC taught me that students can turn this awareness into teamwork and real solutions. As a GSC ambassador, I hope to help more students see sustainability not as a distant global issue, but as something connected to the places we come from, the communities we serve, and the future we choose to build.

Sustainability affects everyone, and determines whether the life we fought so hard for can be passed on to future generations. Be it social, environmental or economic sustainability, I believe that all of us have the responsibility to care about and ensure, hence I would like to start to champion this for the community around me. Through daily actions of reducing energy usage, as well as volunteering for Singapore's nature conservation statutory board to help out with wildlife citizen surveys, I have come to realise that sustainability requires a shift in mindset from consumption to stewardship. Only when we achieve this mentality, can we truly conserve and view the earth as our home rather than a resource.

I care about sustainability because Pakistan faces serious challenges such as energy shortages, pollution, and climate change. Sustainable practices can help protect our natural resources for future generations. They also support the growth of clean energy and a healthier environment. Sustainability can improve the quality of life for communities while creating economic opportunities. By promoting sustainability, we can contribute to a greener and more resilient Pakistan.

Devesh Kumar Bunkar

Indian Institute of Technology,BOMBAY(IIT BOMBAY)

My interest in sustainability isn't abstract — it's been shaped by working directly on the hard tradeoffs corporations and cities face. Doing a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment for Nestlé's palm oil and PET supply chains showed me how over 80% of emissions can hide in land-use change, a blind spot most corporate carbon accounting misses entirely. Mapping flood risk in Prayagraj using GIS made it even more personal: I saw how climate risk maps onto socio-economic vulnerability, with the poorest communities sitting in the highest-risk zones. Studying Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay has given me the technical tools — GHG Protocol accounting, AHP-based geospatial modeling, decarbonization roadmapping — but it's seeing real consequences for real people that keeps me motivated to use those tools for something that matters.

Valeria Cartagena Vaca

Growing up in Bolivia taught me how deeply energy systems influence both economic and social development. I care about sustainability because clean, affordable energy is essential for expanding opportunity and improving quality of life. I hope to help develop the next generation of energy technologies that make sustainable energy more accessible around the world.

Shuk Man Cindy Hui

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

I care about sustainability because I have seen transformation with my own eyes. In 2024, I visited Beijing's Shougang Park, a former coal-fired power plant turned into a thriving eco-district. Standing there, I realized that environmental destruction is not irreversible. With technical innovation, policy action and collective youth power, we can rebuild. That moment shifted sustainability from an abstract concept to my life's mission. Since then, I have represented Hong Kong as a youth climate delegate and led projects turning food waste into bioplastics. I care because I have seen proof that change is possible and I want to be part of making it happen.

Jazmin Zanella

Germany

Regional Ambassador

Technical University of Munich

I first became interested in sustainability because of my love for nature and my curiosity about how different living organisms coexist in balance. Learning about the impact of human activities on these ecosystems motivated me to contribute to initiatives that protect them for future generations.
