From local plantations to a future global movement

PakistanAdaptation & Resilience

What started as a simple observation at university plantation drives in Karachi has grown into a vision for a global green movement. Meet the team behind Sairaab - a GSC project looking to connect citizens, organizations, and students to make their cities greener, one geotagged tree at a time. Here's their story.

Moment: What was the specific moment or conversation that made your team say, 'Okay, let's actually do this'?

During our early university period, we started joining plantation drives conducted in Karachi, Pakistan. There we found some pinpoints and disorganization that led us to thinking of making Sairaab. Sairaab is meant to provide a digital centralized platform for these plantation organizations to join in, geotag their plantation activities on a live Karachi map, where volunteers can join in too - a systematic enrolling of people, transparency of drives being ensured, and the best thing? Young people and students remain informed on what's happening in their city regarding plantations. They are not just limited to what they know or could find online, via social media, or through peers - rather they can engage with any organization's activities.

Inclusion of everybody (citizens, organizations, etc.) to ensure the livability and prosperity of the green movement in Karachi is our biggest goal.

Impact: Fast forward 10 years. If your project is a huge success, what is one major thing that has changed for the better?

In 10 years, we want Sairaab to be worldwide. We are already in discussion on spreading this platform throughout Pakistan cities, every citizen and org working together to upbring their city (collectively the whole country) - so why not spread this worldwide? I believe there lacks a platform like this specifically for joining citizens and people who lack domain knowledge of GIS etc... for these people throughout the world to easily engage in these activities. That will be the biggest boost for me as the founder of the platform.

And yeah, after 10 years? All that data of trees planted, how many plantation drives conducted, CSR carbon monitoring effects - there would be so much valuable data and insights the platform could provide that it would help us shape movements or goals even greater than what we are doing currently for the better and greener Earth. The impact could be huge, and it's a process that will take time, and I am eager to take this through for as long as possible.

Growth: How has participating in the challenge contributed to your growth or learning?

It has been a tremendous experience. It was always so much to learn when you have such top notch university students from Stanford, Indian Institute of Technology, and others. all working on the same challenge of adaptation. It always brings a positive energy and upliftment to do more better and present your idea more refined and professionally. Also just the exposure these kind of challenges give - I am really glad.

Remarkable: What makes your team and project remarkable?

Firstly, our team has inclusion of every domain and that's the best thing. Though we are from the same country, I have my great friends along me from Karachi who are also software developers like me. And then we have Farwa from Sialkot and Mueeza from Islamabad, both amazing in communications and outreach. Then a GIS student (Aqsa from Gilgit) - she's helping us in the Carbon Monitoring module. So yeah, it's great team diversity. And our project Sairaab is already remarkable, comprising of catering to domains like Software, GIS, Geology, Botany, Weather etc., AI system - it's a merge of so many great fields and that's the highlight about it.
